So you want a new website. Whether you are looking to build a brand new website or refresh your old one, planning will be key.
Firstly you need to decide what you want the website to do. Set out your goals and objectives. They can be as simple as ‘create a presence online’ or as specific as ‘increase sales of product A by 50%’.
You will also need to do some analysis of the competition. Find out what they are doing online, can you offer something better?
Gain any insight you can on how to stand out from the crowd.
Remember, your website is not about you. It may sound silly but it’s true. Obviously you have to tell your customers about you but you mainly have to tell them what problem you are solving for them. They don’t want to hear about how you started in a garage in 1984, they want you to help them. If you don’t, they will be off to one of your competitors that they are also looking at because they’ve said they can solve problem X.
The content on your website needs to be engaging, punchy and powerful. You need to grab people’s attention and keep them interested. Make sure that you appeal to all types of people, auditory (people who like words), visual (people who like pictures) and kinaesthetic (people more in touch with feelings).
The first two are pretty self explanatory it’s the last one you need to work at.
It doesn’t matter how good your website is, if people can’t find their way around it then it’s wasted.
If you design and build the website in a way that will lead people through in a logical way, you have much more chance of them staying.
To plan this effectively, a site map is crucial. That way you can plan your customers journey through your site. You can create sales funnels that guide customers to a desired outcome.
Once up and running, analytic software can keeping an eye one where people go on your site and for how long so you can make changes to improve your customer journey.
